Molnár János Cave, Hungary¶
The Molnár János Cave (MJC) is a unique cave system located in the city center of Budapest, Hungary. It is the only known thermal cave in the world that is accessible for diving. The cave is named after János Molnár, a Hungarian geologist who discovered it in 1930.
The MJC is a popular destination for cave divers and speleologists, as it offers a unique opportunity to explore a thermal cave system. The cave is approximately 5 kilometers long, with a maximum depth of 100 meters. The water temperature is around 20°C (68°F) year-round, making it a comfortable environment for diving. The cave is also home to a variety of unique geological formations, such as stalactites, stalagmites, and underwater tunnels.

Diving in MJC¶
There are three options:
-
Introductory dives: These are organized by local dive center and are designed for divers who are new to cave diving. Introductory dives are conducted in the shallower parts of the cave, where divers can experience the unique environment of the MJC without venturing into the deeper and more challenging sections.
-
Guided dives: These are organized by local dive center and are led by experienced cave diving instructors. Guided dives are suitable for divers who are new to cave diving or who want to explore the cave with the help of a guide. The dive centers provide all necessary equipment and training for the dive.
-
Independent dives: These are for experienced cave divers who have the necessary training and certification to dive in the MJC independently. Independent dives require a permit from the local authorities, and divers must follow strict safety guidelines and regulations.
Diving in the MJC requires special training and certification, as it is a technical dive that involves navigating through narrow passages and dealing with potentially hazardous conditions. Divers must be certified in cave diving and have experience in similar environments before attempting to dive in the MJC.
